“Yaks With Altitude”
About Us
Welcome to Yaks of Coalbank Creek!
The first question most people ask us when they find out that we raise yaks is, “Why did you pick yaks?”
For us it all started by going to a Channel 9 News Health Fair. The Health Fair provides a variety of services, one of them being really reasonable blood testing. Once we got our tests back and sent them on to our doctors, we got a call from Mary Jo’s doctor who asked her to come in right away.
Mary Jo went in immediately and was told that she needed to make some life changes because her cholesterol was way too high and was given the choice to start on medication right away or change her diet and lifestyle. We have about 40 acres and had talked about raising cattle. However, when researching what were the best meats to eat for high cholesterol, we found the benefits for yak meat. This began our journey into the wonderful world of yaks. That was 10 or so years ago, and we haven’t looked back.

Yak meat has a delicious and delicate beef like flavor. It is very low in fat and can be easily trimmed off. It is deep red in color, high in protein and low in calories, saturated fats, cholesterol and triglycerides.
Compared with beef, yak meat has one-sixth the fat and 40% more protein. While it is leaner and lower in calories and saturated fat than beef, it is still a moist and flavorful meat.
This naturally ultra lean dark red meat (95-97% fat free overall) is very juicy due to its high percentages of Omega 3 oils, CLA’s (Conjugated Linoleic Acids), Oleic Acids, and Stearic Acids, (35% higher than beef as a percentage of fats that are good for us). At the same time, Yak meat is very low in Palmitic Acid which is bad for us (30% less than beef as a percentage of fats, and 20% less than beef as a percentage of meat). Yak remains higher in protein, solids, minerals, and vitamins than beef, while scoring much lower in saturated fats, cholesterol, triglycerides, and calories than beef!

They looked just too cool at the National Western Stock Show, where we have always gone to re-ground ourselves. We started Coalbank Creek on a vision with 40 acres and a new home but only had our ranch experience from being kids.
We went to Yak fiber groups and watched yak auctions and talked to everyone we could who were showing their yaks. After about 4 years of talking to and looking at local yak producers, we met with a rancher in Montrose who was full of information, and our journey with yaks began.
Yaks are great show animals. We now have a wall full of trophies and ribbons from the NWSS. Yaks are used as beasts of burden such as trekking and as pets, as well as for their, meat, milk and fiber.
Fans of the yak’s red meat call its flavor delicate, sweet, and juicy. Some say it’s like bison, but better. You can’t beat the lean meat, and the Omega 3.
Yaks are naturally friendly animals but as a bovine, they can be anti-social. They have their moments, especially when protecting their newborn, so you should always be careful when around them.
Yes, we started out with two rescued black Clydesdales, (mom) Lady and (son) Diesel, and then over the years we added bee’s, turkeys, chickens, dogs and cats. And we have visiting eagles on occasion.

Ranching is tough but it’s worth it. We started off with only three Royal Heifers and have since grown our herd adding a prize-winning bull and many new little ones. Our nephew Josh has been a great helping hand for several years and his fiancé Kim is an awesome addition. Cheryl has been part of the family for close to 40 years and is now our Web Designer.
